Schematic representation of the life cycle of the turquoise killifish. During the wet season embryos hatch and they quickly reach sexual maturation in 2–3 weeks. After sexual maturation, males and females mate for a few weeks before dying. At the end of the wet season, the ponds dry out and the fertilized eggs remain for months in the dry ground under a state called diapause. On the left are displayed an adult (~ 10 weeks) and a very old (~ 30 weeks) GRZ-D strain male
