X is the external nutrient concentration, n the number of molecules of nutrient inside the cell, v the cell volume and s the number of molecules of signal. n, v and s are variables, X is a parameter. The nutrient is incorporated in the cell at a rate r _i and is consumed at rates r _g (for growth) and r _a (for adaptation).
